A Scottish celebrant shaped by people, place and purpose
Hello, I’m Karen Morrill
I am a Scottish celebrant creating and leading personal ceremonies across Scotland - from weddings, elopements and vow renewals to naming ceremonies, funerals, celebrations of life and the moments that do not always have a name.
For me, celebrancy is about much more than standing up and speaking on the day.
It is about listening carefully. Understanding people. Finding the stories and words that matter. Creating something thoughtful and meaningful - and being someone you can trust to bring it all together when the moment arrives.
That combination of connection, care, calmness and responsibility sits at the heart of how I work.
I am driven by purpose and guided by a set of values of: Fairness; Community; Loyalty, where Respect, Kindness and Compassion are held with care and reach back to my earliest experiences of being part of a community.
Scottish Heritage
Scotland is more than where I was born and have lived all my life - it defines who I am. Coming from Caithness in the far north of the Scottish highlands - I am part of the heritage that shaped generations of my family form its Viking roots. Where grit and resilience is part of everyday, and community is more than a word, it is a way of life.
I grew up as one of six children in a working-class family, in a place where community mattered, people knew one another and you learned early that relationships, reliability and helping each other counted.
Those beginnings have stayed with me.
Scotland is therefore much more to me than a beautiful backdrop for a ceremony. It is home. Its landscapes, communities, traditions and stories are part of who I am.
I now live in the gateway to the highlands - Perth and Kinross-shire, and I will happily travel across Scotland to deliver ceremonies as a Scottish celebrant.
A lifetime of working with people
My work has spanned a lifetime of teamwork - as a counsellor, advisor, orator, advocate, mediator, presenter, manager and leader. Whatever the role - the commitment and purpose has been to communicate, mediate, engage, illuminate and create consensus.
My roles have required me to listen carefully, communicate sensitively, manage difficult conversations, support people through change and make sound decisions when situations are complex.
I have spoken at local and national conferences on community and employee engagement and worked alongside trade unions, media, government and regulatory stakeholders on challenging subjects including safety and organisational change.
That experience matters in celebrancy.
It has taught me how to remain calm when emotions are high, how to listen for what is not immediately being said, how to work constructively with other professionals and, importantly, how to take responsibility for the part I have been trusted to deliver.
Whether I am working alongside a couple, a bereaved family, a funeral director, a venue team or other ceremony professionals, I understand the importance of being prepared, dependable and easy to work with.
Community has always mattered to me
Being involved in community life has been a thread running through almost my whole life.
I was involved with Brownies and Guides as a girl. At seventeen I established a mother and toddler group, and later became a founding member of a community organisation that created an out-of-school care charity for children aged 5–14, a service that is still operating more than twenty years later.
My involvement with that organisation lasted more than a decade.
I have also served as a board member of a mental health charity and today chair my local Community Council.
I think those experiences say something important about me.
I care about belonging. I care about people having a voice. And when I commit to something, I tend to stay with it.
